On June 14th 1996, the FDA first approved Pfizer’s Zmax® (azithromycin extended release) for oral suspension, a one-dose-only treatment for mild to moderate acute bacterial sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumoniae, and community-acquired pneumonia due to Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, or Streptococcus pneumoniae in adults.

Additionally, azithromycin was also approved for the prevention and treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in persons with advanced HIV infection.
